Potty problems in Nipomo

In Nipomo High School’s latest theatrical production, sewage woes pit a small town’s inhabitants against each other with disastrous results.
Sound familiar?
“Urinetown,” the Tony Award-winning musical about one community’s potty problems, comes to the South County school this weekend.
Here’s the premise: When a 20-year drought threatens, the resulting water shortage forces the public to use pay toilets set by a corporation called Urine Good Company (groan).
But some folks are too poor or ornery to pay-as-they-pee.
Public urination becomes a major crime, and violators are trucked off to Urinetown, a mysterious penal colony (double groan) from which no one returns.
Toss in a love story, some stinky corporate stiffs and a strong environmental message and you’ve got a musical unlike many others.
This student production features guest director Eric Stein, of California Cabaret Theatre and Oceano’s Great American Melodrama, and Emmy-winning choreographer Suzy Miller.

“Urinetown: The Musical” continues tonight at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., at Nipomo High School, 525 N. Thompson Rd. in Nipomo. Tickets are $ 8 for students and seniors, $10 for adults.
For more information, call the school at 474-3300 or contact theater program director Robin Metchik at 704-5945.
